Student Spotlight -- Joseph Nguma
Joseph Nguma, IP Scholarship class of 2017, is a senior at the Mount Kenya University and the organization’s first international scholarship recipient. He is pursuing a major in Public Health with a specialization in Community Health and Development.
Joseph was born and raised in Kenya’s rural Makueni County, an area where the poverty rate exceeds 30%. IP representatives first met Joseph in 2017 while building a new primary school in the remote village of Kyanni. A volunteer at the time, Joseph’s work ethic and leadership skills stood out, and the scholarship he received from IP allowed him to pursue his dream of an education.
Joseph has continued his volunteerism while staying on track with his plans to graduate in August of 2021. Joseph’s future career plans involve investment and entrepreneurship, utilizing the strategies he has learned at Mount Kenya University to create a successful business.
He enjoys to travel and write, and he has won three poetry writing competitions so far in 2020. Joseph wakes up each morning with the hope of inspiring other students in their individual life journeys.
