Student Spotlight - April Frederick
April Frederick, inaugural IP Class of 2009, grew up in southside Fort Worth in a single-parent household.
She had early aspirations of a career in social work after seeing first-hand the positive impact a child advocate made in the life of one of her family member’s growing up. April graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Social Work in December 2010. She earned her Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) and worked with various populations, including HIV/AIDS, mental health and developmentally delayed individuals, and at-risk youth. April’s work with at-risk youth encouraged her to transition into teaching. She completed an alternative teacher certification program and began teaching 5th grade reading from 2017 through 2019. She also assisted the girls’ basketball team during this time, which earned consecutive district championships. April is currently working as a literary specialist and spends her free time with family, thrifting, and giving back to others within her local community.
