She had early aspirations of a career in social work after seeing first-hand the positive impact a child advocate made in the life of one of her family member’s growing up. April graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Social Work in December 2010. She earned her Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) and worked with various populations, including HIV/AIDS, mental health and developmentally delayed individuals, and at-risk youth. April’s work with at-risk youth encouraged her to transition into teaching. She completed an alternative teacher certification program and began teaching 5^th grade reading from 2017 through 2019. She also assisted the girls’ basketball team during this time, which earned consecutive district championships. April is currently working as a literary specialist and spends her free time with family, thrifting, and giving back to others within her local community.
